How to Get the Best Results from Retinol Serum

Published by Cailee Moberg on

Retinol gets you real skin results. But like any power, you’ve got to use it wisely. Here’s how to get the most out of a retinol serum in your skin care routine.

Retinol Serum

It’s powerful

Retinol is a powerful skin care product that helps with aging skin, acne scars and dark spots. If used correctly, you can stimulate the production of new skin cells and start to bring back a youthful glow.  Retinol comes in various various concentrations so look at the % of retinol in a product. Here’s a nod to our nightly retinol serum which as 1% retinol – one of the strongest over-the-counter products you can get.

Use it in the PM

Always apply retinol at night. Cleanse your skin first, make sure it’s completely dry and apply retinol next.

Introduce it sloooowwwwly

We know you’re excited to use your new product (we have been there!) but because retinol is the power house of skin care, start slowly. As you begin using retinol, expect some skin irritation when you start using it. This is called “purging”.

WEEK 1: Use only once during the first week so your skin adjusts. To apply, mix 1 pump into a pea-sized amount of moisturizer. Apply to your face and neck avoiding your eye area. Let it fully absorb into your skin.

If significant irritation develops, consider short contact therapy: wash off the retinol mixture after 1-2 hours so it doesn’t stay on your skin overnight.

WEEK 2:
Use twice the second week as a stand alone step. Apply 1 pump directly onto face and neck. Follow with moisturizer.

WEEK 3+:
If you don’t see signs of irritation, increase use to every day as a stand alone step, or by mixing with your moisturizer.

We hope you love your new facial serum as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it for you.
